25th November 2011 - JENSEN MOTORSPORT Team re-opens after 5 yr sabbatical
Jensen Lunn announced today that he is to take his racing to the next level in 2012 as he re-opens his own motor racing team. Jensen ran his own team from 1999 – 2005 under the Jensen Motorsport banner competing in Formula Ford, Formula Opel, TOCA Formula Renault and British GT, since dissolving the team Jensen has focused on his race driving with other teams such as Saxon Racing and Strata21 but has now decided to re-open his own outfit on the back of his success in Britcar this year in which he secured 3rd place overall with co-driver Sarah Bennet-Baggs.
The Jensen Motorsport team will compete in GT's in 2012 with a new Chevron GR8 GT car powered by Cosworth, Jensen comments "For me it was always about getting back to having my own team again, I am somewhat of a perfectionist and racing for other teams has, albeit successful been at times frustrating for me as I know I could do it better myself, during this season I have worked hard off track to secure the financial backing I need and have now agreed on the Chevron GR8 GT / Cosworth package for 2012 & 2013, support from Chevron has been agreed as has the engine supplier, we anticipate to run potentially 3 cars", the teams chief engineer Martin Scott adds "Jensen is very determined to make a success of this, he has the right financial backing and we have been busy buying trucks and support equipment for months, the tie up with Chevron and Cosworth is fantastic news, Jensen has also secured the right engineers and a lot of time has been put into the team project as a whole, we are aiming at Britcar and potentially British GT, the second driver has been agreed but cannot be disclosed until January, its all very exciting".
The team based in Fareham, Hampshire has moved into its new premises and the new car development is well underway, testing is planned for early February. The teams engine specialist engineer James Wells adds "for us the Cosworth power plant was the right choice, the chassis has been designed with Cosworth in mind so it was a no-brainer, it also offers excellent management options and gives us the flexibility we need to ensure the right set-up for each event, we are pleased with its dyno results so far, we know how important engine reliability is in endurance GT racing and Cosworth offer a huge amount of experience in this area".
Jensen concludes by adding "This is a fantastic opportunity for us, we are approaching this as if we were an FIA GT team, we have invested heavily in equipment and personnel to ensure we have everything we need to be competitive and professional, we are proud of our sponsors and advertisers and as such very much look forward to providing them with a first class team that has, as do they, very high attention to detail".
Jensen Motorsport thanks it's sponsors and advertisers and look forward to working with them in the upcoming seasons.
Epic Finish For Jensen In Britcar 24hr Race At Silverstone
Regular Britcar runners Sarah Bennett-Baggs and Jensen Lunn were joined by Adam Sharp and Steve Maher as they headed for the Britcar 24hr race at Silverstone in what became an incredible story of perseverance by the team to get the flag.
On the Monday before the race, regular drivers Sarah and Jensen were informed by Strata21 that their regular BMW E46 had been sold and that they were to run in a completely new car recently purchased.
On the test day, Thursday before the race, the new BMW E46 despite looking stunning with its GTR bodykit and brushed steel livery, wasn't performing well. Overheating problems and a misfire was diagnosed and a new engine was required.
A few phone calls later, Jensen and two of his engineers set-off to collect a new engine and by Friday's midday qualifying session, it was fitted. Scrutineering would not let the car run due to it being 109 decibels as apposed to 102. So day qualifying was missed, the team spent the rest of the afternoon fitting different exhaust systems to reduce the noise and teams technical manager Andy Curtis pleaded with the officials to let the team qualify at night.
Finally Friday at 8pm the car rolled out into the pit-lane for all drivers to do their 3 laps in night qualifying. The new engine still not entirely happy, but it was more fuel pick-up than anything serious, and new pumps, were fitted. The results of night-qualifying showed the team were 33 fastest out of 57 starters, and in the warm-up on Saturday morning 18th fastest overall. However since the grid was set from Friday's day qualifying (which was missed) the team were starting the 24hr Jensen took the start of the race, and in the first hour rocketed the team from last (57 starters) to 18th place, in fact before his stint ended Jensen had got the car up into 13th place overall. But as regular driver and fuels stops were made (every 1hr 15mins) or so the team settled into the top 20's as day went into night.
Adam Sharp was driver no 2 and it was at the end of his stint that problems started to occur. He came down the pit lane around 7.30pm with a very broken engine, oil plastered all over the car, inside and out. The boys pounced onto the car to quickly unbolt and remove the hot, sick engine. (closer inspection showed scored piston bores) Into the car went the engine which was taken out Thursday night, remapped, and with uprated fuel pumps this was the team’s only hope. A few test laps by Jensen at 9.30, confirmed all was well. Next driver Sarah was sent out for her first stint and first proper drive of the new car, having had a good couple of hours in the pits the car had dropped to 51st place!
Through the clear warm night Sarah, Jensen and Adam worked hard putting in good clean drives with no incidents, the car performing well. By day break they were back up into 38th position. Steve Maher jumped in for his daylight stint, and it wasn't until mid-morning where problems started again.
A serious vibration started to occur diagnosed as a broken front ball-joint which had to be changed. With temperatures rising as midday arrived, engine temperatures were going through the roof and had to be monitored closely leaving everyone short shifting to ensure it lasted till the end.
The E46 BMW finally crossed the line at 4.30pm piloted by Jensen after a total 411 laps and 22 pit stops to an emotional but elated team.
Sarah commented "I have never seen such a amazing sense of camaraderie as I have this weekend, we have had some seriously talented people on this car, everyone has worked relentlessly to keep getting this car out despite all the problems. No-one wanted to give up and park it. A finish is as good as a win for us, I think we are all surprised from Thursday's start how it ended it has indeed been epic!"
Adam adds “Fantastic team effort! No one really knew each other on Thursday - however, the team formed quickly and the passion shown by the mechanics and drivers was fascinating to watch. At no point did any of the mechanics give up or even doubt that the car would cross the line after 24 hours. Another great 24 hours to have finished."
Jensen Adds “in the face of defeat the team and all us drivers refused to accept what seemed inevitable, following 2 engine changes, fuel pump failures, warped discs, broken wishbones, mapping faults, (the list goes on) no one gave up or had any sleep !, for me taking the flag at the 24hr point was amazing, a feeling which will stay with me for a long time, it was very emotional for all involved, an epic effort from the team, including butler Motorsport and all my team drivers who never had one single wheel off track. A fantastic race indeed.”
Jensen Lunn Battles huge grid to secure 3rd place at Snetterton!
Last weekend saw the return of the Britcar Championship to the new revised Snetterton 300 circuit in Norfolk, a huge challenge for any driver with the twist and turns of the infield and the high speed sections creating a unique circuit that offers difficult set-up options for both drivers and engineers.
Testing started on Friday with a loss of power reported back to the team, an investigation showed a faulty Air Temp sensor telling the cars ECU it was –1 !!, hence a failed fuel map, sensor replaced and we were back on track, both Jensen and Co-Driver Sarah pushed really hard working through a schedule of set-up changes to find the optimum for the new track layout, at close of play on the test day Sarah had recode a time of 2:06:32 and Jensen had managed 2:04:87 (on new tyres).
Saturday arrived which offered a test session in the morning, both drivers took to the track to settle in and find the balance again, the track was changing every hour as was the weather, intermediate tyres were requested just in case but slicks were the order of the day. Testing went well with both drivers recording slight improvements on Fridays times although the ambient temperature was a little lower which was helping engine performance.
Qualifying was frustrating, with only one hour and both drivers to drive the loss of power returned, without time to diagnose the drivers both pushed hard to achieve the best time they could, Jensen managed to pip sarah to the fastest time securing 5th on the grid, just 1 second off pole.
Sunday morning offered another warm up in which more tests were carried out by the engineers to get to the bottom of the power loss, new fuel maps were uploaded to the car and Sensors replaced and it was thought finally it was fixed.
The race would see Sarah starting, she had an excellent start and was fighting hard through the pack, our pace showed we could win for sure, then the call came over the radio, we had a loss of power again, still battling on Sarah managed to hold station before pitting at the hour to hand the car to Jensen, launching out of Pit road Jensen set about finding areas where the car was strong, for example in the high down force sections and pushing there to make up for a lack of top end speed, this worked well seeing some excellent overtaking not least passing the Ferrari 430 on the outside around Coram!!!, Team engineer Steve Scott adds “Jensen’s drive was first class, I told him on the radio that he was catching the 3rd place car by 4 seconds a lap, he took no time to pass it and take 3rd, he made some awesome moves making mincemeat of cars like Ferrari and Porsche, Its always a pleasure to watch him drive”. Jensen brought the car home in 3rd (excluding invitational non points scoring car) which the team were very pleased with as the car was diagnosed to be at least 50 bhp down.
Jensen Lunn fights car problems to secure 7th at Castle Combe on 24th July 2011
Last weekend saw the return of the Britcar Championship to the spectator favourite Castle Combe Circuit in Wiltshire, the track always delivers excellent viewing for the crowds with lots of on track action all over.
With no testing available on Friday the Strata21 BMW M3 GTN car was straight into qualifying which was to highlight a drive-train vibration, especially in the high speed sections of the track, the team worked hard to locate the problem which was finally diagnosed as a faulty prop shaft joint, unfortunately amongst many hundreds of spare parts the team carry this was not one of them.
What followed next was nothing short of brilliant, team members scattered to all parts of the uk to locate the part, phoning racing colleagues, dealerships and motorsport dealers, eventually the part was located 60 miles away, Jensen and engineer James set off to collect it whilst the team dismantled the car in preparation for the part, flying through the Wiltshire countryside in his Amg Mercedes (at the speed limit of course) James and Jensen soon returned with the part, a few hours later the team were ready for Sunday’s Race.
The start was taken by Jensen who immediately reported to the team on the car to pit radio that the vibration was gone, and set about chasing the field, following some blistering laps he was up behind the GT pack and ran at the same pace as the Ferrari 430 and Porsche 997 for over 11 laps !, which was fantastic, at half way Jensen handed the car to co driver Sarah-Bennet-Baggs who continued the push home, then, out of the blue the car shut down, complete electronic failure, Sarah had no option but to park the car, diagnostics show a small relay failure, at least the pair were at ¾ race distance so were awarded points for 7th.
Now the team look forward to Snetterton on 14th August.
Jensen Lunn takes 2nd place at Spa Francorchamp circuit after troubled weekend!
Last weekend saw the return of the Britcar Championship to the famous Spa Francorchamp circuit in Belgium, this track always delivers great racing both for competitor and spectator and last weekend was no exception.
With testing on Friday showing front running pace the Strata21 BMW M3 GTN car developed a crack in the block just moments before qualifying which forced engine revs to be limited in qualifying to try to protect the engine for the short qualifying session, team driver Sarah Bennet-Baggs went on track first and set a good time but the teams qualifying time was set by Jensen putting them firmly in P2 for qualifying.
The team worked furiously into the night to undertake what was "the best repair possible" on the fractured engine block. On Sunday the race started with everyone glued to the monitors just waiting for that puff of blue oil smoke that would indicate the repair had failed and our race was over, but it didn’t come, indeed Sarah battled through the grid that had jumped passed on the start and came in to give the car to Jensen in 3rd place after 1 hour of racing, Jensen immediately got on the pace and moved up to P2, then in the closing stages of the race the car gremlins returned, the racing diff started to fail causing almost undriveable vibrations through the car, following this was the return of the oil leak / cracked block, Jensen had to nurse the car home which required all his knowledge of cars and endurance racing to do so, this included short shifting gears, switching on additional cooling fans and keeping revs as low as possible, and with 4 seconds over the 3rd place car Jensen managed to finish the race in a well earned P2.
The teams Mosler driver Callum Lockie adds "Wow what a race, both our Mosler and Jensen’s M3 GTN both secured P2 in our classes, Jensen drive was incredible, it was very enjoyable watching the car through Eu-Rouge, Jensen was taking that whole section flat with no brakes!, the split timing showed he was 1.8secs quicker in that sector than the rest of his GTN class, fantasti !"
The team now look forward to Castle Combe in a few weeks in which they will arrive as points leaders in GTN class.
Jensen Lunn takes win at Thruxton in the pouring Rain!
Last weekend saw the return of the Britcar Championship to the tracks, this time at the Thruxton circuit, known as the fastest track in the uk, Thruxton always delivers great racing both for competitor and spectator and last weekend was no exception.
With electrical gremlins grounding the Strata21 team at their depot in Cambridge on Friday evening, a round the clock action plan raced into operation with engineers and parts being rushed from all over the uk to the teams HQ to fix the cars, following a 3am finish on Saturday morning it was agreed that the team would miss the test session and official qualifying but would make it in time for the race.
Whilst this meant the 2 team cars could race, it also meant that championship regulations would dictate that they would both have to start the race from the back of the grid. The race was always going to be wet and the clouds overhead did not disappoint, the rain lashed down for the whole race, Jensen fought his way up to first place setting the fastest lap in the process, a fantastic drive not only to avoid the 7 accidents that happened and the 3 safety car sessions but also to do so in conditions that were at times un driveable, after 1hr of running and just before Jensen was planning on Pitting to hand the car to co-driver Sarah Bennet-Baggs the stewards stopped the race due to adverse weather conditions and the win was secured.
This win was the first for the Team this year which was an added achievement to have secured the fastest lap and win starting from the back of the grid, this was also achieved by the teams 2nd car the Mosler piloted by Callum Lockie And Team Boss Paul White, Jensen Comments “Wow !, what a race, both Callum and I managed to keep our cars out of trouble, cut through the field and secured both fastest laps and wins in our respective classes, excellent result for the team following a tuff lead up to this weekend, a big thanks to team boss Paul White, Steve and all the guys, excellent job and I am so pleased to have been able to repay them for all their hard work”, the team now rich with championship points now prepare for their next race at Spa-Francorchamp in Belgium.
